A Weekly Compendium of Local Appearances And More

Ever since my life began,
There've been times I need somebody here,
To help me understand.
I can find my plan with a helping hand from you.
Your help will do.
And I'll be here to help you too.

Local Clubs Step Up To Help
Beachland and Winchester To Host Benefits This Week

One of the things that the local music community is known for - beyond the excellent talent and variety of genres - is it's willingness to help out in times of need. This week two of the area's best music venues present shows designed to help two local families. You can be part of the events by being there or by donating to the causes backed by these fine establishments.

Tonight, the Beachland is hosting a benefit for Cuzin Dave Wilson. Long-time host of WRUW's popular country music roots and branches program, "When The Roses Bloom Again," Dave has been hospitalized during the past month due to a very serious illness.

To assist the family in covering mounting expenses, the Beachland Ballroom is holding a benefit for Cuzin Dave starting at 7:00 pm and lasting throughout the evening until the music runs out. Many of the bands appearing tonight have been featured on Cuzin Dave's radio show in the past and are playing tonight to give a little back to someone who is so connected to Cleveland music.

Here's the list of scheduled bands as of this writing:

Hillbilly Idol
Hey Mavis
Jane Dough
Waxwings String Band
Rob Bliss Trio
Take This Hammer
Matt Harmon
Colette
Doug Wood
Quinn Sands
John McGrail
New Soft Shoe
Matt Harmon

In addition to a night of great twang music, there will be both a Chinese auction and a silent auction, as well as a 50/50 raffle. If you are unable to attend the benefit but wish to make a monetary contribution, checks or money orders (no cash) can be made payable to Cuzin Dave Wilson and mailed to:

Saturday night the Winchester opens it's doors and stage for a benefit performance for Ronnie McKenzi Jr. This one is personal because instead of being a well known local radio personality Ronnie was the son of a friend of one of the musicians scheduled to play this benefit. Funds raised will got to help the family cover funeral expenses.

In Samsara
Ryan Ferren on bass on the right

This show will feature In Samsara, an experimental band that showcases the writing of bass player Ryan Ferren. Ryan plays in both strumming and tapping styles, creating intricate landscapes of sound on the bass guitar. I heard him the last time he was at the Winchester for the Monsters of Bass show and was captivated by his music.

Also on the bill will be The Crooked River Blues Band, a modern take on a traditional string band. Spotlighting agile banjos, wonderful fiddle riffs, wicked guitar licks, driving rhythm and soulful singing, this band alone is worth the price of admission.

The benefit will open with Joy and Friends.  Joy is a folk singer with a charming and witty stage presence who can entertain and captivate an audience.

Joy
Joy will be on stage with Doc and Josh

She will be joined on stage by multi-instrumentalist Josh Stevens and fiddler Doc Z two of the Winchester regulars with both great talent and great heart.

Tickets for this benefit are $10 at the door. Show time is 9 PM.

Cleveland musicians are stepping up to help out this week. If you're looking for an interesting night out that can also help some folks in need check out one or both of these shows.

Keep on keepin' on,
Bob

While You're In A Giving Mood
Here's a little something you can do to help returning Veterans either from home or when you're out in clubs.

Miller High Life is sporting a special bottle cap that can be returned to the company to help give Vets "a piece of the hight life." You can collect the caps yourself or ask your favorite bartender to save them. Here's what they look like:

Look For These Caps

Each returned cap is worth ten cents up to a possible one million dollars that Miller will be donating to help make life a little better for those who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.  I know that Rebecca at the Winchester is saving the caps. Don't let this opportunity get away. You can get a little more information here.

Random Acts Of News
Right here, right now, right in the middle of the rerun season RAM has a new show this week. Or at least it's mostly new.

Will Kimbraugh opens this week's show with a mini guitar lesson as he demonstrates his favorite lick. An award winning guitarist, Will hails from Nashville these days and brings his music to Cleveland every now and then. Henry J caught up with him on a recent visit and got a chance to interview him and record him doing a couple of his original tunes.

Will Kimbraugh Up From Nashville

There are a couple of reasons I'd suggest making a point to watch this week's episode. First, the music Will creates is really good. I was not aware of him until I saw the show, but I've had a chance to check him out since then. The second reason is to give you an idea of just how good the local acts that RAM usually features really are compared to a denizen of Nashville. All in all, we stack up pretty well.

While there is no voice lesson this week you will get to see an encore performance from Catera from an earlier show this season. They provide a nice coda to Will's fine performance.
Show Times: Time Warner Cable NEON Channel 23 Monday/Wednesday/Friday 9:30PM, Saturday 2:30PM, Sunday 9:00PM. WIVM Canton/New Philadelphia Tuesday Midnight, Massillon Cable 21 and CPI Wooster Channel 21 Wednesday/Friday/Sunday 6:00PM. On the web 24/7 by watching here.
Open Mic Nights
These vary week to week and the best way to find out where I'm playing is to hit Twitter for the most recent updates. I try to post the venues by mid-afternoon to allow plenty of time to decide if you're up for an evening out. These appearances are generally limited to 15 to 20 minutes and can be any time during the evening. Come early, stay late. Maybe you'll discover some great local talent.

Buyin' The CD
If you'd like a copy of my 2009 release, Here's To You Friends, featuring 11 original songs, there are two ways to pick one up. If you're at a show, just ask, I usually have some with me and they're only $10 at the venue of your choice. Alternately you can click here and make a secure purchase with your credit card or PayPal account for only $12.50 which includes shipping. Either way, I think you'll enjoy the music. Thanks for listening.

Upcomin' Events
Saturday September 11th - French Creek Nature Center Sheffield - 1- 2 PM - TrueNorth moves it's summer finale outdoor blowout to the grounds of the French Creek Nature Center for several hours of music from local acts. I played this one last year and had a ball. Surrounded by local artists and nature, tasty food and lots of parking it's a free, fun family event.

The lineup of acts has finally been announced. When you make it out to this show you'll get to hear:

Noon - 1PM          Mallory SanMarco
1 PM - 2 PM          The Sunrise
2 PM - 3 PM          Bob Sammon
3 PM - 4 PM          Morrison and McCarthy
4 PM - 5 PM          Forever Young with
                               Jim Anderson

I'll have more on these acts in coming weeks but it's never too early to set aside the time and mark your calendar for this one.

Make plans to spend part of the day with us. And even if the weather turns bad we have the option of moving it all indoors so it's going to be a good day no matter what.
Saturday September 18th - The Beck Cafe - 7 - 9 PM- Have I mentioned that I'm starting to be a regular at the Beck Cafe? (17823 Detroit Ave., Lakewood) Yeah, I thought so. So I'm back there on the 18th and all the usual stuff applies. Lots of parking. Tasty treats. Good coffee. Outside if the weather is nice. Two hours of good music. Hope to see you there.
